Stoke City 3-1 Manchester City: Two extra-time strikes

guardian.co.uk
The Britannia crowd, when their blood is up, can resemble the mob of Madame Guillotine, and Roberto Mancini left the Potteries with choruses of "You're getting sacked in the morning" ringing in those so-sophisticated ears. The tumbril beaters were doubtless premature but the richest club in the country will not have enjoyed going out of the FA Cup to homespun Stoke and after barely two months in charge the Italian is already deemed to be "under pressure".

Mancini had called on his players to match their opponents' fighting spirit but it was Stoke who scored twice in extra-time to book a quarter-final trip to Chelsea on 7 March and Mancini's claims after the game that his team had "played very well and dictated for 80 minutes" will cut no ice with demanding employers who had so little patience with Mark Hughes.

The Mancunians had Emmanuel Adebayor sent off after 82 minutes for lashing out with an arm and catching Ryan Shawcross in the throat but that was no excuse for an embarrassing defeat which leaves them with only a top-four finish in the Premier League to play for in a season which began with such stratospheric hopes.

Stoke were second-best for an hour but opened the scoring through the substitute Dave Kitson after 79 minutes, then shrugged off Craig Bellamy's quick equaliser to settle the issue in the extra half-hour, with a headed goal from Shawcross and a coruscating gem from Tuncay.

The two sides came to the replay in contrasting form. Stoke's attritional football is not to everybody's taste but Tony Pulis has found a method that makes optimum use of limited resources and his team are unbeaten in 2010 - a run that stretches back 11 league and cup matches.

For Mancini, on the other hand, the honeymoon may not be over but it is certainly drawing to a close. After replacing Hughes in December he got off to a flying start, with six wins in his first seven games, but the next eight have produced only two victories and already there are murmurs of discontent with his training methods emanating from the dressing room. The fans were less than chuffed when English football's nouveau riche managed one point from two league fixtures against the paupers of Hull and were well beaten by two of their rivals for a top-four finish, Tottenham and Everton. They will be even more disgruntlednow.

Mancini's team began well enough. The home crowd were still launching into their first rendition of "Delilah" when Adebayor had them gasping with a high-velocity 30-yarder which forced Thomas Sorensen to fly to his right to save. They held their breath again when a clever turn and sprint through the middle by Togo's favourite son unhinged their defence. Fortunately for Stoke, Adebayor's intelligent transference of the ball to Bellamy on his left was wasted by the Welshman's poor first touch. Stoke had their moments, too, but similar shortcomings in the penalty area caused a stalemate which was not broken until the 79th minute.

Then, like overdue buses, the goals came two together. First Kitson exchanged passes with Tuncay before driving past Shay Given, left-footed, from right to left. Then Bellamy beat Sorensen from 12 yards after Adebayor had knocked down Wayne Bridge's left-wing cross.

Into extra-time Stoke were ahead again within five minutes when Rory Delap's trademark long throw from the left was met at the near post by Shawcross, whose header flew past Given and in at the far side. Four minutes later Tuncay made the game safe with an outstanding piece of skill, swaying one way and then the other in a slalom past defenders before scoring with a crisp left-footed finish.

Aston Villa 3-1 Crystal Palace: Carew double penalties

Paul Ellis/AFP/Getty Images
The prospect of reaching two Wembley finals in the same season remains alive for Aston Villa but their passage into the last eight of the FA Cup was nothing like as comfortable as Martin O'Neill would have wished. Darren Ambrose's second-half spot-kick threatened to take this fifth-round replay into extra-time before Matt Lawrence fouled John Carew twice in the last 10 minutes and invited the Norwegian to convert two penalties of his own.

Carew's seventh and eighth goals of a largely underwhelming season spared a strong Villa side another 30 minutes of football four days before Sunday's Carling Cup final against Manchester United at Wembley.

Relief was etched across O'Neill's face as the Northern Irishman celebrated reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time as a manager, with a trip to Reading on Sunday week the prize.

Villa ultimately deserved to go through but it was difficult not to feel sympathy for Crystal Palace. Neil Warnock's side were under siege for much of the first half but television replays showed that Martin Atkinson, the referee, should have awarded a goal-kick and not a corner in the lead-up to Gabriel Agbonlahor's headed opener. That Villa's late equaliser at Selhurst Park had arrived in similar circumstances, poured salt into the Palace wounds.

"As always these corners that are goal-kicks crop up, don't they?" Warnock said mischievously. "I knew that Nick Carle kicked it on to the player's left ankle and that it had gone out for a goal-kick. You could see from the halfway line where the fourth official was standing. I don't understand how referees can't see things like that. It's only a little thing but it's a goal. It does my head in at times."

The Palace manager was evasive about his future, refusing to deny speculation linking him with the Queens Park Rangers job. He maintained that he will travel to Doncaster on Friday for the Championship match the next day but is expected to step down shortly afterwards. His name was chanted before and during the game by the sizeable contingent of Palace supporters here and for a brief period it looked as though he might mastermind a Cup upset.

Stephen Warnock's lunge on Alan Lee presented Ambrose with the chance to register his 17th goal of the season at a time when Palace were growing in confidence. Lawrence, however, pressed the self-destruct button, tugging at Carew's shirt to give the forward the chance to level before later clattering into him from behind.

"I'm particularly pleased for the players. I didn't see anyone shirking anything at all before Sunday," O'Neill said. "And I think that speaks volumes for the team."

"We knew they like to soak up pressure and they got the early goal which made it easier for them but we've got an away goal and with a performance like that in London we've got a great chance."

Just like rivals AC Milan in their defeat by Manchester United on the same pitch last week, Serie A champions Inter got off to a good start.

Thiago Motta threaded the ball forward and Samuel Eto'o miscontrolled it before strike partner Milito confirmed his excellent form this season by cutting in from the left and beating Cech at the near post.

Steady heads

Chelsea's heads failed to drop despite the vast roar from the Inter crowd and they were soon troubling keeper Julio Cesar, playing despite being shaken in a car crash early this week.

A Michael Ballack piledriver forced the Brazilian into his best save and Didier Drogba rattled the bar with a vicious free kick.

Kalou, included on the left with Florent Malouda employed at left back, then had a strong shout for a penalty turned down on the stroke of half-time after a challenge by Walter Samuel five metres out.

The Ivorian had his reward after 51 minutes when Julio Cesar failed to stop his curling shot through a crowd of players.

Argentine Cambiasso then grabbed the winner, blasting in at the second attempt from the edge of the box.

Mourinho did not gloat over taking a slender advantage to London in three weeks time.

"Of course I am happy inside," said the Portuguese.

"Because as a professional I want to win and as a professional I want to win more trophies than anyone else.

"There were no surprises from us tonight and Chelsea didn't have any either.

"We are evenly matched sides. Chelsea are not better than us, they have different qualities just as we do."

Stoke City 1-1 Manchester City: Whelan score,Faye sent-off

uk.eurosport.com
Abdoulaye Faye was shown a straight red card after the break following a dour first half but Glenn Whelan fired the home side ahead after 72 minutes.

And Stoke looked to be headed for their seventh home win of the season until Barry responded quickest to poke home with five minutes remaining before Ryan Shawcross saw his 95th-minute header dubiously ruled out.

Roberto Mancini faced a selection headache before kick-off with Carlos Tevez and Craig Bellamy out and Shaun Wright-Phillips, Stephen Ireland and Martin Petrov, who all eventually made the bench, struggling to shrug off knocks.

And the visitors, who had lost their previous two away games at Hull City and Everton, were slow out of the blocks, with Stoke dictating the opening exchanges.

Man City failed to deal with a long Rory Delap throw but were let off the hook with Shay Given collecting a tame shot in a crowded box before Delap saw his shot from the edge of the area blocked while Whelan volleyed over.

And Faye saw his powerful header nodded over the bar by Joleon Lescott in what proved to be the best chance of the half.

But City weathered the storm, with Micah Richards and Lescott, playing his third game since returning from injury, particularly strong at the back during the opening 45 minutes.

Faye was Stoke's star man during the first half, performing his limited duties to perfection.

But the former Newcastle defender was sent for an early bath by referee Alan Wiley after miscontrolling a long City clearance and subsequently hauling down Emmanuel Adebayor.

Credit to Stoke, though, as Tony Pulis's troops refused to lie down and Ricardo Fuller had a penalty appeal turned down after a tangle of legs with Barry.

And their wholehearted approach paid dividends when a catalogue of errors handed them the advantage.

Man City failed to deal with Delap's cross from the left and, after Adam Johnson's attempted clearance ended in an air-shot, Whelan fired a 22-yard strike at the flapping Given, who pushed the ball into his own net.

City began to get a stranglehold on the game with substitute Wright-Phillips proving a menace down the right.

But the equaliser came in fortunate circumstances when Adebayor rose to nod on to Barry, whose side-footed volley hit the post only for the ball to fall to the former Aston Villa captain who turned it home despite lying in the heap on the floor with Shawcross.

And there was still time in a frantic finish for Shawcross to have his towering header disallowed for a foul on Given as Stoke searched for what would have been an unlikely but deserved win.

OL Lyon 1-0 Real Madrid: Makoun stunning shot

afp
Lyon picked up their third successive home win over Real after the Cameroon midfielder Jean Makoun drove a stunning 25-metre shot into the top corner of the net in the 47th minute.

Earlier Ronaldo tried to set up Gonzalo Higuain in the box with a clever back-heel but Lyon's defenders reacted more quickly than the Argentine striker.

Sidney Govou went close for Lyon with two early volleys and the hosts almost broke the deadlock before the interval when a superb long-range volley by Cesar Delgado hit the post.

Makoun put the home team in front soon after the restart and Lisandro Lopez almost made it 2-0 when he shot just wide. Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris then saved a deflected shot by Ronaldo and another attempt by Higuain from close range.

"It was a very physical match, Lyon played with a lot of passion and they covered the ground well and marked us very well,'' Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini said.

"The result is not good for us, we've conceded a goal without scoring. We will need a very disciplined performance to turn this round, but I have faith in my players.''

The second leg is in three weeks at the Bernabeu stadium, with defender Marcelo and Xabi Alonso suspended after collecting yellow cards.

AC Milan 2-3 Manchester United: Rooney double

[GALLO/GETTY]
Manchester United supporters may have been chanting: "There's only one David Beckham," but at the San Siro there was only one Wayne Rooney.

Two headers from Rooney helped Manchester United to a 3-2 victory at AC Milan in the Champions League last-16 first leg, as United came from behind to score a crucial away win.

A spectacular goal by Jean Makoun gave Olympique Lyon a 1-0 win over Real Madrid, handing the Spaniards their first away defeat in this season's competition.

Nine-time champions Real, who last reached the quarter-finals in 2004, dominated possession but failed to create many chances despite Cristiano Ronaldo's efforts up front.

United made sure they spoiled David Beckham's first ever appearance against his old club after the former England captain - on loan to Milan from the Los Angeles Galaxy - had provided the free kick that led to Milan's early goal in the first leg match.

United defender Patrice Evra half cleared Beckham's free kick and the ball came to Ronaldinho who scored with a deflected shot.

Paul Scholes equalised with a 36th minute miskick from Darren Fletcher's cross. The midfielder missed the ball with his right foot but it struck his left leg and the ricochet took it past surprised goalkeeper Dida.

Veteran United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar had to make top quality saves from Andrea Pirlo's long range free kick and Ronaldinho's curling drive before Rooney struck twice at the other end.

He headed home a cross by Antonio Valencia in the 66th minute and was left unmarked to head powerfully home from Darren Fletcher's cross from the left in the 74th.

Facing United for the first time since moving to Real Madrid in 2003, Beckham was replaced by Clarence Seedorf after 71 minutes and left the field to applause from United fans.

Seedorf added a second for Milan when he turned home Ronaldinho's cross in the 85th minute but the seven-time European champions need a convincing win at Old Trafford to make it to the quarter-finals.

Michael Carrick was sent off in injury time for a second yellow and will miss the second leg on March 10.

Aston Villa 1-1 Manchester United: Nani sent-off

daylife
Manchester United failed to reach the full rate when come to the headquarters of Aston Villa, Wednesday, February 10, 2010. Play in Villa Park, Manchester United were held 1-1 in Premier League continued.

MU left first when Carlos Cuéllar ripped nets Edwin Van der Sar in the 19th minute. Defender's host conquered the number one goalkeeper MU through world class header. Meanwhile, Red Devils scored a reply came from an own goal the host players, James Collins, in minute 23.

Chelsea had the first opportunity in the second round by Antonio Valencia. Actually the ball he could shift gears towards Ryan Giggs, but Valencia Villa tried to rip his own net. Consequently disappointing because the ball just bounced into the goal.

56 minutes back Red Devils opened up opportunities. Through soccer corner Michael Carrick give feedback on Wayne Rooney. Unfortunately, the ball still can be blocked by Luke Young and the return failed to create the second goal that night MU.

This could not be separated from Nani sent-off since the first round to make MU working hard with Rooney. Nani received a red card in the 29th minute as to tackle to use both feet.

MU manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, who seemed exasperated with the effort to try to give Rooney a new injection through Dimitar Berbatov.

Arsenal 1-0 Liverpool: Diaby header hero

[GALLO/GETTY]
Abou Diaby was the hero at the Emirates Stadium when his 72nd minute header revived Arsenal's hopes of playing a major role in the English Premier League title race with a 1-0 victory over rivals Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger's side had collected just one point from their previous three games but their crucial home win ensured they maintained the pressure on Chelsea and Manchester United who both missed out on vital points.

"We believe in our title chances and you could see that Chelsea again lost tonight and Manchester United dropped points, it is still open,'' Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said.

"I don't see any mathematical reason why we shouldn't believe.''

Arsenal created the better first half opportunities and should have been ahead after just seven minutes when the unmarked William Gallas headed over from Fabregas's free-kick.

Fabregas burst forward to collect a neat back heel from Nicklas Bendtner and was brought down by Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel on the edge of the visitors' box.

The free-kick was wasted, but the move appeared to show Arsenal the way through the Reds back-line.

In the second half Andrey Arshavin served early notice of Arsenal's more positive approach when he fired a firm shot into the side netting from a tight angle.

Liverpool responded in kind, carving out a good chance for the advancing Lucas that ended with the young Brazilian mirroring Bendtner's miss of the first half.

Moments later Gallas produced an outstanding last-ditch tackle to deny David Ngog who had been sent clear from the halfway line by Steven Gerrard's pass and the balance of the clash appeared to have shifted in the visitors' favour.

Arsenal then dominated the crucial period of the game that culminated in Diaby's goal.

Tomas Rosicky should have done much better when he found himself bearing down on Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina and Bendtner was unlucky to see Daniel Agger hack his goalbound shot to safety.

Bendtner played the ball wide to Rosicky who delivered the perfect cross for Diaby to head home from six yards out.

Wigan Athletic 1-1 Stoke City: Scharner, Tuncay score

espnstar.com
Paul Scharner's strike was cancelled by Tuncay Sanli as Stoke denied Wigan a precious victory at the DW Stadium.

The Latics took an early lead when Paul Scharner connected with Charles N'Zogbia's wonderfully-flighted free-kick in the 14th minute.

But Tuncay rose to head home Matthew Etherington's cross 16 minutes from time to ensure it finished honours even.

Although other results meant the draw moved Wigan up two places to 14th in the table, Roberto Martinez's side were the superior side for long spells and now have only one win in their last 10 Barclays Premier League games.

Stoke, meanwhile, extended their unbeaten run since the turn of the year to five league games.

Tuncay dispossessed Mohamed Diame in the second minute and made a purposeful run into the box, but the Turkey forward was crowded out and the ball went for a throw.

Rory Delap launched it back into the area where it was only partially cleared to Glenn Whelan, whose shot was deflected wide.

At the other end, Hugo Rodallega was brought down on the edge of the box by Ryan Shawcross and took the free-kick himself, but could only send it straight into the wall.

Jason Scotland made a better attempt on goal in the 10th minute having been fed by James McCarthy, but after cutting inside his man the Trinidad and Tobago striker could not direct his shot on target.

Three minutes later Wigan were ahead. Etherington was booked for obstructing N'Zogbia midway into the Stoke half and the Frenchman sent a beautiful delivery into the box from the free-kick which Scharner headed past the diving Thomas Sorensen.

With their confidence buoyed by the goal, Wigan continued to push forward and after a mazy dribble, Diame had a shot blocked which fell to Rodallega, whose attempt flew over the bar.

But Stoke applied some pressure around the half-hour mark, with Etherington's free-kick causing a goalmouth scramble which was cleared away and Whelan sending a speculative effort over.

Gary Caldwell then received a yellow card for bringing down Tuncay as the Potters striker broke forward, but Robert Huth drilled the free-kick straight into Shawcross, who could not get a decent shot away.

Mamady Sidibe was next to fire wide for Stoke and Tuncay sent a volley into Chris Kirkland's arms after connecting with an Etherington cross.

But as the half drew to a close Wigan went close to extending their advantage, Scharner managing to flick N'Zogbia's corner towards goal from six yards out, but the midfielder was leaning back too much to guide it on target.

Stoke came out for the second half looking determined to pick up the tempo, and after Delap had seen one of his long-throws punched away by Kirkland, Tuncay wasted an opportunity to equalise, miscuing a volley from close range after Huth had nodded down for him.

Tony Pulis threw on Ricardo Fuller - who was arrested at the weekend - after an hour, and a minute later Tuncay unleashed a shot on the turn which was deflected over by substitute Jordi Gomez.

But at the other end, Rodallega almost produced a moment of magic, holding off Shawcross with his back to goal and executing a bicycle kick that looped inches over Sorensen's bar.

Stoke were looking increasingly potent and with just over a quarter of an hour remaining, they found an equaliser through Tuncay.

Etherington played a through-ball to Fuller, who made a lung-bursting run into the box but could only send a cross to the feet of Caldwell.

The defender's clearance went straight back to Etherington, though, who crossed for an unmarked Tuncay to head past Kirkland.

Two minutes later, the Potters almost turned the game around completely as Fuller nodded Etherington's cross back for Sidibe, who saw his header bounce off the crossbar.

Substitute James Beattie then had the chance to seal it for Stoke on the stroke of 90 minutes but Kirkland dived to push his shot away, while Marcelo Moreno - who had also come off the bench - scuffed an effort at the other end.

Fulham 3-0 Burnley: Murphy, Elm, Zamora score

espnstar.com
Fulham moved into ninth place in the Barclays Premier League with a comfortable win over Burnley at Craven Cottage.

First-half goals from Danny Murphy and David Elm put the home side in control and Bobby Zamora wrapped up all three points with a second-half free-kick.

Burnley, who have yet to win away this season, remain close to the relegation zone.

Fulham engineered the first chance of the game in the seventh minute when Damien Duff's cross shot only just evaded the far post and the waiting Simon Davies.

Duff should have done much better when he got clear of the Burnley defence five minutes later but his cross from the touchline fell behind all the onrushing Fulham attackers.

Burnley responded with Andre Bikey trying his luck from 30 yards. However, his weak effort was well wide of the target.

There was little to enthuse about in a dull opening period although Duff continued to threaten for the home side.

In the 21st minute, Elm tried to curl the ball around Brian Jensen but the Burnley goalkeeper held the ball at the second attempt.

But captain Murphy broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute. A cross from Nicky Shorey was headed into his path by Elm and the Fulham midfielder applied a neat finish from six yards.

Burnley almost levelled from the restart but Steven Fletcher's 20-yard angled drive flashed past Mark Schwarzer's right-hand upright.

Dickson Utuhu was denied Fulham's second goal in the 28th minute when his 20-yard shot was brilliantly pushed to safety by Jensen.

But the second goal arrived in the 31st minute when Zamora got the better of Leon Cort only to see his shot parried by Jensen.

However, Elm followed up to slip the loose ball beyond Jensen from six yards for his first goal for the club.

Burnley boss Brian Laws immediately replaced Cort with Chris Eagles.

In the 42nd minute the Clarets almost pulled a goal back when a 25-yard free-kick from Tyrone Mears hit the angle of crossbar and post.

But Fulham remained in charge and Elm could have added to his tally had he not drifted offside moments later.

Zamora was a constant thorn in Burnley's side but required much better support from the midfield.

Schwarzer was called upon to deal with a cross from Wade Elliott in the 45th minute but the Fulham keeper had largely been untroubled in the opening half.

Zamora should have made it three for Fulham five minutes after the interval but his eight-yard shot was brilliantly saved by Jensen.

Seconds later an attempted cross from Duff almost confused Jensen and the Burnley keeper was relieved to see the ball drop onto the top of the net.

But Burnley paid for some woeful defending in the 54th minute when Zamora was fouled by David Edgar on the edge of the Fulham penalty area.

The striker dusted himself down and curled a low free-kick into the bottom corner of the net to make it 3-0 to the home side.

Fulham continued to dominate and Duff had a shot deflected just wide in the 65th minute.

Elm and Zamora were forming a clever partnership in attack and Burnley struggled to cope with their neat approach work.

In the 69th minute Murphy almost worked a shooting chance for himself after threading his way through the Burnley defence but Jensen smothered the danger.

Substitute Stefano Okaka should have made it 4-0 to Fulham in the 78th minute but Jensen pulled off another fine save to deny him.

Okaka then saw a 90th-minute shot flash just the wrong side of the post as Fulham tried to finish with a flourish.

Intermilan 3-0 Cagliari: 10 points clear

espnstar.com
Inter Milan moved 10 points clear of AC Milan at the top of Serie A with a convincing victory over in-form Cagliari.

Winter signing Goran Pandev gave them the perfect start after five minutes' play with Argentinian duo Walter Samuel (20) and Diego Milito (47) wrapping the game up nice and early for Jose Mourinho's men.

The result ended a six-game unbeaten run for Massimiliano Allegri's Cagliari, denting their hopes of European qualification.

The Nerazzurri had won their last eight consecutive home games and the confidence that afforded them showed as they forged ahead in the sixth minute.

Javier Zanetti led an Inter attack and created an opening for Macedonian forward Pandev to score from close range.

To the Sardinians' credit their response was positive as Daniele Conti forced an excellent save from Julio Cesar in the Inter goal with a 25-yard drive.

However, Inter again served notice of their attacking threat with Pandev to the fore in their best moments, first firing in a shot from outside the box which just cleared the crossbar in the ninth minute and then drawing a stunning save from Cagliari goalkeeper Michael Agazzi with a superb volley five minutes later.

The second goal did come in the 20th minute as defender Samuel outjumped Cagliari's Michele Canini to steer home a header.

The match already looked beyond Cagliari, and Brazilian forward Jeda blasted a chance over from 25 yards.

Allegri's men had reason to feel aggrieved in the 34th minute when Alessandro Matri's goal was ruled out for offside, with the visiting team protesting to the referee that Davide Santon's touch had played him on.

Julio Cesar ensured Inter held their two-goal advantage going into the half-time interval as he kept out a Nene volley that seemed destined for the corner of the net.

Two minutes into the second half the game was effectively over as a contest when Pandev linked up with Samuel Eto'o to create a chance for Milito, whose low right-foot shot from 10 yards took his league tally to 14.

A defensive mix-up between Agazzi and Davide Astori almost resulted in an embarrassing goal going against Cagliari just after the hour mark, and Inter came close to a fourth again with just under 20 minutes to go.

Milito shaped to shoot but instead back-heeled the ball towards Pandev, but he could not apply the vital finish to add his second of the game.

The last chance fell Cagliari's way as Matri failed to make contact with Daniele Dessena's dangerous low cross into the Inter box 10 minutes from the end.

For Inter it marked three more points towards what looks like another Scudetto success, with AC Milan dropping points in a goalless draw at Bologna.

Chelsea 2-0 Arsenal: Drogba double strikes

espnstar.com
John Terry remained as inspirational as ever in a Chelsea shirt as the Blues put an end to Arsenal's title dreams.

Stripped of the England captaincy 48 hours earlier and the subject of more lurid headlines about his private life, Terry responded in a typically defiant manner as two first-half goals from Didier Drogba put Chelsea back on top of the Barclays Premier League.

It was perhaps inevitable that Drogba's first goal in the eighth minute arrived courtesy of a glancing header from Terry.

Taunted by Arsenal fans throughout for his alleged affair with French lingerie model Vanessa Perroncel, the former girlfriend of Terry's one-time team-mate Wayne Bridge, the Chelsea captain produced a commanding performance at the heart of the defence.

The victory restored Chelsea's two-point lead over Manchester United at the top of the table and, more significantly, increased the gap over third-placed Arsenal to nine.

The outcome was never in doubt once Chelsea's other talismanic figure had put them in front with a simple volley at the far post.

Drogba's 21st goal of the season was the perfect start for Carlo Ancelotti's side and with their confidence sufficiently rocked, Arsenal failed respond before the Ivory Coast striker added his second.

When Arsenal did manage to get past the imposing Terry, they were woefully wasteful with Andrey Arshavin the main culprit.

In the 20th minute, a delightful chip from Cesc Fabregas found the Russian unmarked inside the penalty area but he volleyed straight at Petr Cech.

Two minutes later Arsenal were handed a lesson in textbook finishing which was to ultimately leave their title dreams in tatters once more.

Chelsea thought they had put Wenger's side out of the race when they defeated the Gunners 3-0 at the Emirates last November.

But Chelsea's poor form in December, coupled with a resurgent Arsenal during the same month, all but wiped out an 11-point advantage.

However, the north London club's remaining title chances were dealt a killer blow by Drogba's 22nd goal of the season in the 22nd minute.

Frank Lampard was given the freedom of Stamford Bridge to run 30 yards before supplying the Ivory Coast striker with a simple pass.

The Arsenal defence continued to back-pedal and that was the invitation Drogba required to cut inside from the right and fire a left-foot volley beyond Manuel Almunia.

Chelsea could have increased their advantage but Ashley Cole was denied by Almunia after Lampard's incisive pass had put him clear on goal in the 31st minute.

Arsenal were a different side in the second-half but the task was just too much for them.

Chelsea defended too deep and that allowed Arsenal to press forward in numbers.

Terry was forced to play much of the second period with his thigh heavily strapped after a muscle injury but there was little chance of him deserting his post.

Theo Walcott should have done better when clean through but got caught in two minds and before he could get his shot away, Chelsea's defence cleared the danger.

Cech, who had preserved Chelsea's lead in the first half, was in outstanding form and pulled off another great save to keep out a goalbound Fabregas free-kick.

But as Arsenal overstretched themselves, Chelsea looked for a third.

Michael Ballack went close with an angled drive which flashed beyond the far post on the hour but Cech rescued Chelsea again 11 minutes from time by whipping the ball off the toes of Arsenal substitute Nicklas Bendtner.

Arsenal enjoyed plenty of possession but the final ball was poor and Chelsea, led by the unruffled Terry, were tigerish to the end.

Drogba should have completed a fine hat-trick but his 83rd minute free-kick from 20 yards cannoned back off the crossbar.

In the end, it was of little consequence, leaving Terry to enjoy a welcome moment of elation in front of his adoring fans as Chelsea climbed back to the Premier League summit.

Birmingham City 2-1 Wolves: Super sub Phillips

espnstar.com
Kevin Phillips came off the bench to earn a victory for Birmingham with a two-goal blast against local rivals Wolves.

Kevin Doyle looked to have given Wolves boss Mick McCarthy the perfect present on his 51st birthday by breaking the deadlock shortly before half-time.

But then 36-year-old Phillips replaced the injured Christian Benitez and struck twice in six minutes to leave the visitors in the bottom three.

It was rough justice for Wolves, who had been a match for Blues for lengthy periods with Doyle a constant threat to the normally solid Blues rearguard.

But Birmingham's battling spirit again surfaced, with midfielder Barry Ferguson driving them on before Phillips' decisive contribution.

There was a minute of applause before the game in memory of former Blues player and manager Gil Merrick, who died earlier in the week aged 88 and rival goalkeepers Joe Hart and Marcus Hahnemann laid wreaths in the two goalmouths.

The home side were the first to settle and a superb pass from Ferguson picked out the run of Lee Bowyer. However, the former England midfielder - who scored the winner in the match between the sides at Molineux earlier in the season - was denied a shooting opportunity by a fine tackle from Ronald Zubar.

Wolves midfielder Michael Mancienne blocked a close-range header from Cameron Jerome after Liam Ridgewell had turned James McFadden's corner back across goal.

Blues forced six corners in the first 15 minutes and, from one of them by Sebastian Larsson, Hahnemann blocked a close-range attempt by Jerome after the ball had bounced back across goal off Benitez.

Hart became the first player to be booked after 25 minutes for bringing down Doyle after the goalkeeper came racing out of his area.

Wolves came more into the game and made use of their extra man in midfield via a 4-5-1 formation - and Zubar wasted a great chance to put them in front after 32 minutes.

A free-kick from the left flank by Matt Jarvis found its way to the unmarked Zubar at the far post - but he sent his header back across goal when he should have at least tested Hart.

Jerome had a third opportunity when a dummy by Benitez allowed him a run at goal but Hahnemann was able to block the low shot with his feet.

Scott Dann was only a couple of feet wide with a low shot on the turn after Hahnemann only half punched clear Larsson's corner.

Kevin Foley volleyed straight at Hart from eight yards out before Doyle put Wolves ahead with his sixth goal of the campaign.

There was an element of good fortune as Jarvis' low centre hit Roger Johnson, ricocheted onto a post and fell perfectly for the striker to convert the rebound - but it was no more than the visitors deserved after overcoming a sticky start.

Wolves continued to look the more impressive and composed and Jarvis had a shot blocked after Mick McCarthy's side had failed to cash in on a three versus two numerical advantage on the counter-attack.

Doyle was making life uncomfortable for Johnson and shot into the side-netting after more good play.

Blues boss Alex McLeish made his first substitution after 63 minutes with Phillips replacing Benitez, who was injured in a challenge by Hahnemann and eventually carried off on a stretcher.

Doyle continued to give the City defence headaches and Dann was booked for a challenge on the Republic of Ireland international.

Wolves newcomer Adlene Guedioura came on for Jones after 67 minutes and a minute later the ineffective Larsson made way for Blues' January capture Craig Gardner. McLeish made his final change after 74 minutes with Keith Fahey replacing McFadden.

Hart got his body behind a shot from Foley and Guedioura was only a couple of feet too high with a 25-yard drive.

Jerome had a shot deflected wide as Blues tried to salvage a point - and then Phillips dramatically turned the game on its head.

With 10 minutes remaining he levelled from close range after Gardner had turned a Fahey centre back across goal.

And Phillips won it in the 85th minute when he chested down Stephen Carr's cross and beat Hahnemann with an angled drive into the corner of the net.

Hull City 2-1 Manchester City: Boateng 25 yards volley

espnstar.com
Hull followed up Tuesday's draw with Chelsea by defeating Manchester City to climb out of the relegation zone.

Phil Brown's side had not won since November but were buoyed by their performance against the Blues and deservedly took a 31st-minute lead through the impressive Jozy Altidore.

City then found themselves two down nine minutes after the break thanks to a rocket from George Boateng and, although Emmanuel Adebayor quickly pulled one back, they rarely threatened to equalise.

The talking point before the game was the inclusion in the City side of Wayne Bridge after two months out with a knee injury and amid the fall-out from John Terry's alleged affair with his former partner.

Craig Bellamy and youngster Dedryk Boyata also returned to the City starting XI while January signings Adam Johnson and Patrick Vieira were among the substitutes.

Hull boss Phil Brown named an unchanged XI from the side that drew with Chelsea.

Having booed Terry relentlessly when Chelsea visited the KC Stadium in midweek, the Hull fans also subjected Bridge to some taunts.

It was the hosts, clearly buoyed by their performance against the league leaders, who began the brighter and Altidore won a free-kick 20 yards out when he was felled by Kolo Toure, who picked up a yellow card.

The USA striker had looked lively from the start but his set-piece was deflected behind by the visitors' wall.

Boyata looked nervy and he became the second City defender to be booked inside 20 minutes when he pulled back Altidore after the striker had out-muscled him.

Stephen Hunt's free-kick from the left was headed away but, when it was launched back in, Steven Mouyokolo headed on for Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who fired wide of the far post from 10 yards.

City simply could not get into their rhythm and it was Hull who deservedly took the lead in the 31st minute.

Boateng played the ball into Vennegoor of Hesselink just inside the area and his lay-off was expertly curled round Shay Given by Altidore for his first Premier League goal.

The visitors finally threatened in the final moments of the half but Mouyokolo did well to block Carlos Tevez's close-range effort and Bridge then saw his shot saved by Boaz Myhill after a neat move down the left.

Hull again came out of the blocks the faster at the start of the second half and Altidore felt he should have had a penalty for a challenge by Nigel de Jong but referee Phil Dowd waved play on.

But the home fans did not have long to wait for a second, and there cannot have been many better goals scored at the KC Stadium.

Hunt's corner, which came after Bridge was beaten for pace by Craig Fagan, was cleared but only as far as Boateng 25 yards out and his beautifully-struck volley flew past Given.

That gave Hull breathing space after only nine minutes of the half but five minutes later City were back in it.

Johnson came on for his debut in place of Stephen Ireland and it was his corner, after Myhill had pushed Tevez's shot round the past, that eventually resulted in Adebayor netting from inside the six-yard box.

City boss Roberto Mancini chose that moment to reintroduce former Arsenal midfielder Vieira to English football in place of Bellamy.

The momentum was now with the visitors and Myhill had to be alert to tip Johnson's free-kick behind while Amr Zaki replaced Altidore for Hull.

The home side were mostly playing on the break and Zaki got away down the left but his shot was easily saved by Given.

Bridge's afternoon ended five minutes early as Mancini sent on Martin Petrov as a final throw of the dice and Johnson then almost caught out Myhill with a cross from the right that the keeper was grateful to see drop behind for a corner.

Tevez's snapshot drew another stop from Myhill while a late barrage ended with Adebayor poking a tame shot at the keeper as Hull celebrated a priceless win.
