Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Westham United: Lifted to fourth

uk.eurosport.com
Tottenham Hotspur lifted themselves to fourth in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over West Ham United at White Hart Lane.

Luka Modric set the North Londoners on their way with a goal on his first start since returning from a broken leg that has kept him out since August, while West Ham suffered a double blow when losing both Scott Parker and Herita Ilunga to hamstring strains early in the first half.

The home side passed up a host of chances, and West Ham were beginning to enjoy a good spell of pressure themselves in the second half, though that was cut short when Hammers old boy Jermain Defoe smashed in Spurs' second after a quick break with 10 minutes to go.

Though well marshalled in Tottenham's Boxing Day draw at Fulham, Aaron Lennon showed he was back to his best in the early stages, twice showing Ilunga a clean pair of heels as the home side took control.

Parker latched onto a neat ball from Guillermo Franco before firing wide in West Ham's best movement of the half, though moments later Lennon got free again, and this time West Ham were made to pay. Defoe sent Lennon racing clear down the right flank, and though his pull-back was deflected clear of crouch by James Tomkins, Modric came racing in from the left to fire home.

West Ham lost the services of Parker and Ilunga in quick succession, and save for a rather tame Jack Collison effort midway through the half, created no real chances.

Whether the Premier League will do the same when they receive McCarthy's explanation for his team selection remains to be seen, although if there is a fine, which seems to be the most likely punishment, Wolves will deem it a price worth paying if three points here were the reward.

Victory propelled Wolves out of the relegation zone and up to 12th place, passing Burnley, who have now picked up just one point from a possible 27 on their travels and failed to win in seven matches.

"I am not looking for justification or vindication," said McCarthy. "I expected the performance because of the decisions I made. The nice part was that the players believed in me and trusted me and let me get on with it. They were 100% behind me and they played well today."

No one was more impressive than Doyle. The Republic of Ireland international helped to create the first goal for Milijas when he picked Clarke Carlisle's pocket deep in the Burnley half and then scored the second after winning an aerial duel with Steven Caldwell on the edge of the area before spinning, stepping inside Michael Duff and drilling beyond Brian Jensen for his fifth goal of the season. "He was fabulous," said McCarthy. "He was full of running. Amazing what a rest does for you."

Everton 1-1 Birmingham City: Unbeaten record

guardian.co.uk
It is a mark of Birmingham City's serene return to the Premier League that Alex McLeish can identify with the causes of Mark Hughes's demise at Manchester City. He can only hope Carson Yeung is not the kind of foreign investor who wants his expectations both raised and realised before Christmas.

The Birmingham manager was ebullient at Goodison Park after his side dipped below par against Everton yet departed with a point and their unbeaten record improved to nine matches. Sandwiched between City and Liverpool in the table, they displayed a resilience that underlines their seamless transition but not the invention to hurt an Everton side immersed in the club's worst home run since 1972. Ideas of Europe, therefore, will not be encouraged from the manager yet.

"It is difficult sometimes for the owners because they can be like supporters and think we are going for Europe now and that is not right," said McLeish. "But I'm sure they know we have a fragile squad and if we lose key players, and we will to injury and suspension, it could be difficult to maintain the type of form we have shown." He also suggested City might "rue" the day they dispensed with Hughes but, unlike the Welshman, the Scot at least has opportunity to sustain a club's radical improvement.

Here, they were fortunate only a five-matching winning streak came to an end. It was a source of annoyance and bewilderment to Everton that the game should have been beyond Birmingham long before the visitors equalised with their first attack. David Moyes's decision to deploy Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and Steven Pienaar on unorthodox flanks was vindicated immediately as the home side made a vibrant, incisive start that suggested the two clubs occupied false positions in the table. From a throw-in on the right by Tony Hibbert, Louis Saha chested the ball into Bilyaletdinov's path and the left-footed Russia international stepped inside Lee Bowyer to sweep his fourth goal in nine Everton games past Joe Hart.

Real Madrid 6-0 Real Zaragoza: The biggest win

espnstar.com
Real Madrid swept aside sorry Real Zaragoza with consummate ease at the Bernabeu, thumping the Blanquillos 6-0.

The game was over as a contest inside the opening 34 minutes as Madrid raced into a 4-0 lead through braces from the in-form Gonzalo Higuain and Rafael van der Vaart.

Manuel Pellegrini's side then added two more goals in the second half through big-money summer signings Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema - on his 22nd birthday - to record their biggest win of the season.

Pellegrini will also have been delighted to see his team keep a clean sheet in their first match without influential centre-back Pepe, who is set to miss the rest of the season through injury.

However, it was a forgettable night for Zaragoza coach Jose Aurelio Gay, who had been put in temporary charge of the promoted strugglers following last weekend's sacking of Marcelino Garcia Toral.

Madrid went into the match trailing Barca by five points but with a game in hand as Pep Guardiola's side had already played - and won - their round 15 match against Xerez over a week ago due to their commitments at the Club World Cup.

And with Barca stealing all the limelight with their record-breaking success in Abu Dhabi earlier in the evening, Madrid would have been desperate not to give their arch-rivals any further cause for celebration by slipping up against Zaragoza.

The result was never in doubt though once Higuain latched on to Marcelo's pass and fired a left-footed drive past Javier Lopez Vallejo to put Madrid ahead after just two minutes.

Van der Vaart, enjoying plenty of playing time in the absence of the injured Kaka, then twice went close before doubling his side's lead in the 26th minute following another good through-ball from Marcelo.

The Dutchman needed just two more minutes to double his own tally, slotting home Sergio Ramos' cross from close range, and Higuain then made it 4-0 not long after.

The Argentinian capitalised on a half-clearance by Roberto Ayala to fire a looping shot over Lopez Vallejo for his 10th goal in his last eight games.

At the other end, Iker Casillas had one save to make in the opening 45 minutes, diving full-length to turn aside Angel Lafita's long-range effort.

Casillas had even less to do after the break as Madrid continued to hold total control over the match.

It took the hosts just four minutes of the second period to extend their lead, with Ronaldo getting his name on the scoresheet.

The £80million man must have been disappointed not to have got involved in the first-half goal glut, but he picked up his 13th goal in 12 competitive appearances for his new club when he turned his marker inside out before firing left-footed into the far corner.

Pellegrini then decided to give Raul and Benzema a chance to shine, sending them on in place of Higuain and Marcelo in the 62nd minute, and the birthday boy Benzema needed just nine minutes to make his mark.

The France international scorched past former Madrid player Francisco Pavon before firing an unstoppable left-footed shot into the far corner.

Madrid could have added further goals in the closing stages, while Jermaine Pennant fired a decent effort just wide in a rare Zaragoza attack, but the scoreline remained unchanged as the home side cruised to their eighth home win out of eight this season.

Blackburn Rovers 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur: Crouch inspiring

uk.eurosport.yahoo.com
Peter Crouch hit a brace as Tottenham Hostpur earned a 2-0 win at Blackburn Rovers that put them in the top four of the Premier League.

The England striker (pictured) netted in first-half injury time and with seven minutes left of an even match that highlighted Sam Allardyce's striking problems.

While Crouch was clinical, burying his three chances with one disallowed for offside, Rovers forward Benni McCarthy was unable to take two good opportunities and Franco Di Santo never looked like going close.

McCarthy was unfortunate not to equalise in the second half though, striking the post via the body of Heurelho Gomes after his brilliant chest-down played him clear, while skipper Ryan Nelsen somehow missed out on pulling back a late goal when his point-blank header managed to bounce over.

The heavy snow and blustery wind seemed to suit the hosts, who started brightly and initially pegged Spurs back.

Aside from a counter that saw Crouch play the ball just behind Jermain Defoe when the right pass would have put him through, Rovers attacked with intent and defended stoutly, with 19-year-old Canadian David Hoilett particularly bright.

Mostly playing on the left, the speedy striker drew cautionable challenges from Michael Dawson and Vedran Corluka as the visitors struggled to deal with Blackburn's direct approach.

Jerome's goals looked to have tied up the game but a late Ryan Nelsen goal made Birmingham sweat, but they eventually held on for a vital three points.

Birmingham came into tonight’s match on a run of four straight league victories and showed their intent on extending that run by pressing Blackburn in the early stages, and were rewarded with a goal.

James Mcfadden played a short corner to Sebastian Larsson, who whipped a cross in from the right which eventually fell to the feet of Jerome who tapped in from close range to give the home side a deserved lead.

Four minutes were added on by the fourth official and Blackburn nearly grabbed an undeserved equaliser. Kalinic met Pedersen's corner at the front post only to see his header hit Sebastian Larsson's face on the goal line.

A frantic finish ended with both sides attacking and Larsson had a shot saved by Robinson in the final seconds.

The final whistle was met with a sigh of relief from the crowd at St Andrews and their side now go up to sixth in the table, Blackburn drop one place to 13th.
