Everton 2-0 Bolton: Arteta, Pienaar score

uk.eurosport.com
Second-half goals from Mikel Arteta and Steven Pienaar gave Everton a 2-0 Premier League win over 10-man Bolton at Goodison Park on Saturday 20/03/2010.

In a close-fought match that saw Everton dominate possession but have the busier goalkeeper in Tim Howard, the 71st-minute sending off of Gretar Steinsson for a professional foul proved the turning point, with Arteta curling in the subsequent free-kick.

The Toffees had a lucky escape 10 minutes earlier, when Tim Cahill was fortunate not to see a second yellow card from referee Alan Wiley for handling in the Bolton box as he tried to create a goalscoring opportunity.

Pienaar added a late second to seal a victory that puts David Moyes's side eighth after Birmingham City lost to Sunderland, with Bolton slipping a place to 14th.

Everton bossed the ball in the first half but Bolton were bright on the break in what was initially an open contest.

The visitors had an early penalty appeal turned down when the ball struck Johnny Heitinga on the arm but it was deemed ball to hand after Kevin Davies flicked it up from right under the Dutchman.

Two minutes later, Victor Anichebe should have scored but, after being played clean through by Cahill, delayed the finish to allow left-back Paul Robinson to fly in with a trademark sliding tackle.

For Bolton, Zat Knight fired straight at the well-placed Howard when Lee Chung-Yong found him unmarked at the far post with an excellent free-kick from the left.

Anichebe, whose career has been decimated by injury, was carried off on a stretcher after landing heavily from a robust challenge with Robinson, clutching his side in agony with what seemed to be a lower rib or hip injury.

Leighton Baines, set to be England's number-one left-back with Ashley Cole and the 'retired' Wayne Bridge both injured, was getting forward with regularity for the Toffees and, on 32 minutes, was denied a clear shot at goal by a superb saving tackle from Lee.

Five minutes later, Bolton had a superb chance when Tamir Cohen blasted inches over after Everton failed to clear a Davies cross as, for all Everton's possession, the visitors looked the more incisive in the final third.

Soon after, Howard was forced into action again, denying Davies with his feet after a superb passing move by Bolton that saw Lee backheel the ball to Jack Wilshere, who slid the Trotters skipper through.

That moment highlighted the mark Owen Coyle has made on his Bolton side so far, although they are at times slow to react defensively, shown in first-half stoppage time when a straight long ball sent Baines clean through, his hesitance to shoot with his right giving the defence time to get back and block as he tried to shift the ball on to his favoured left.

The second half was mostly Everton's, with Bolton restricted to half-chances and shots from range.

Cahill had a header blocked by Steinsson after a teasing ball from Philip Neville, while there was a mini turning point when the Australian - booked in the first half for a wild lunge at Wilshere - escaped a second yellow card when penalised for a handball in the Bolton box.

Wiley could only have decided that the offence - palming the ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen to set up a finish that Andy O'Brien blocked - was unintentional but he was less lenient nine minutes later, when Steinsson was shown a straight red card for a push on Ayegbeni Yakubu after Pienaar played him clean through.

Arteta scored from the subsequent free-kick, a delightful effort that dipped over the wall and snuck inside the left-hand post with Jaaskelainen stranded.

Almost immediately 10-man Bolton nearly levelled, Zat Knight heading over after Davies flicked on a Robinson free-kick.

Everton responded by bringing on Leon Osman for Yakubu as they dominated the final minutes.

Diniyar Bilyaletdinov headed Arteta's excellent cross over, while Osman was guilty of a dreadful miss when he smashed the ball against the bar from six yards after Jaaskelainen failed to hold Heitinga's shot.

Osman made up for it seconds later though, with a direct run down the right and a clever ball to the edge of the box that, with a minute of normal time remaining, set up a simple finish for Pienaar to put the result beyond doubt.

Arsenal 2-0 Westham United: Vermaelen sent-off

getty images
Arsenal had managed to overcome resistance to West Ham United 2-0 score. But the decision of the referee who sent-off Thomas Vermaelen unacceptable Arsene Wenger.

Quick goals Denilson and Cesc Fabregas scored a penalty to Arsenal beat West Ham in action held at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday (20/3/2010). Three numbers were even led the Gunners to the top of the league.

If there are things that prop Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, it was a red card for Vermaelen. The defender was evicted because the accused dropped referee Guillermo Franco in the box was forbidden, and awarded a penalty for West Ham.

"I was angry at two things that (the red card and penalty). I felt that was unfair. We have seen many situations like this in the game, no one punished," Wenger whiskers on the official Arsenal site.

Arsenal was lucky because penalties are taken Alessandro Diamanti failed to fruition goals. Anticipating the right of goalkeeper Manuel Almunia to make great save. Wenger also gave credit for the goalkeeper.

"He has often received criticism, not all true, in my opinion. He's a bit problematic at the beginning of the season, but in 2-3 months I saw he was amazing and a credit to him. He silenced all criticism," added Wenger.

Received a red card Vermaelen central defender made the ban will be punished appear. Problems can be more complicated for Wenger because another trusty defender, William Gallas, not too fit.

"I hope it will not be a problem, but we can not continue to lose central defender, definitely. I can not have six central defenders, it does not make sense," said Wenger.

"So at this moment, we can not play and we lose Gallas Vermaelen. Sol Campbell appear unusual, but kept playing could be a problem for him."

"I thought I would give her a break next week to recover. I think he's very important to us and I think he's a good recruiting," added the French manager.

Stoke City 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur: Gudjhonsen first scores

uk.eurosport.com
Tottenham Hotspur moved a step closer to securing fourth place in the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

Eidur Gudjohnsen scored his first goal for Spurs just 20 seconds into the second half, and soon after his side were playing against 10 men as Dean Whitehead was sent off. Despite being a man down, former Spurs winger Matthew Etherington equalised from the penalty spot for the Potters, before Niko Kranjcar fired home the winner for the North London side.

The win puts Spurs four points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool and five ahead of sixth-placed Manchester City, who have two games in hand. Aston Villa are also five points behind, with one game more to play than Tottenham.

With striker Jermain Defoe joining Aaron Lennon on the Tottenham injury list on Friday, Spurs lacked a cutting edge up front. Their cause was not helped when Roman Pavlyuchenko limped off injured in the first half, the in-form Russian striker being replaced by Eidur Gudjohnsen on 36 minutes.

The visitors struggled to cope with Stoke's physical approach, and it was the home side that had the better of the scant first-half opportunities.

Although Spurs managed on the whole to repel Rory Delap's long throws, one such delivery was met by a flick-on from Dave Kitson, and goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes had to get down low to palm the effort away.

Stoke skipper Abdoulaye Faye headed an effort over the bar after Gomes pawed at a cross, and had a shot on the turn blocked by Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

Gareth Bale was often Tottenham's best attacking outlet, although he had to deal with some typically rough treatment from the home side. The Welshman was on the receiving end of a clumsy challenge from Whitehead, for which the Stoke midfielder picked up his first booking of the afternoon.

Thomas Sorensen was only called into action once in the first half. The Denmark keeper spilled a Niko Kranjcar shot but managed to pounce on the loose ball before Peter Crouch could follow up.

Having been denied any clear-cut chances during the whole of the first half, Spurs took the lead right from the restart. Gudjohnsen played the ball to Crouch and latched on to the return pass lifted over the defence, and stayed strong under pressure from Faye to blast a rasping finish into the roof of the net and open his Tottenham account.

Two minutes later Stoke were down to 10 men when another awkward challenge from Whitehead - on Luka Modric this time - led to Mike Dean showing him a second yellow card and a subsequent red, the sixth shown to a Stoke player this season.

At that point it looked as though Spurs were going to run away with the match, as Modric and Gudjohnsen combined well for the Croatian to force a save from Sorensen.

However, Benoit Assou-Ekotto contrived to allow the Potters back into the match. First the Cameroon defender had an on-pitch row with team-mate Vedran Corluka, calling for Ricardo Fuller to step in and separate the pair. Then, just minutes later, he conceded a penalty for a foul on Dave Kitson, which Etherington clinically despatched on 64 minutes.

Tottenham were clearly rattled by letting their lead slip, and they should have gone behind when a loose ball broke for Fuller on the edge of the six-yard box, only for the striker to fire over the bar with one of the worst misses of the season.

The visitors regained their composure, and Assou-Ekotto earned partial redemption by creating the winner, as Gudjohnsen dummied over his low cross allowing Kranjcar to fire into the top corner for his first goal since December.

Yet still Stoke could have pulled the rug from underneath Tottenham's top four ambitions when Sebastien Bassong's suicidal header back to Gomes fell right into the path of substitute Mamady Sidibe, but the striker slipped over at the crucial moment.

Spurs withstood a late barrage of Delap throws and Etherington corners to hang on for a vital three points.

Aston Villa 2-2 Wolves: Carew double

uk.eurosport.com
Wolverhampton Wanderers were denied a vital three points at Aston Villa as a John Carew brace salvaged a 2-2 draw in the Premier League.

Carew opened the scoring after a quarter of an hour before a Jody Craddock strike and a James Milner own goal gave Wolves the lead. The Norway striker then claimed his second eight minutes from time to rescue Villa from a derby defeat and keep their hopes of finishing fourth alive. The point moved Wolves four points clear of the relegation zone ahead of the rest of Saturday's matches.

Martin O'Neill's side were missing Gabriel Agbonlahor, and Villa certainly missed the striker's pace as they fielded a front pairing of Carew and Emile Heskey.

Villa started the 100th league meeting between the two Midlands rivals brightly, with Carew flashing a shot across goal and Stewart Downing having an effort blocked at the near post by goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann.

They got their reward on 16 minutes with Carew's fifth league goal of the season. Wolves poured men forward after James Collins had lost possession, but they failed to engineer a chance and Villa launched their own break. Ashley Young beat Roland Zubar on the wing and drilled a low ball across the six-yard box which presented Carew with a simple close-range finish.

Wolves drew level midway through the half from a free-kick after a foul on Kevin Doyle by Stiliyan Petrov, for which the Villa captain was booked. David Jones launched the dead-ball in from deep and Zubar laid it off to centre-back Craddock, who beat Brad Friedel for his fifth goal of the season, one less than Wolves' top scorer Doyle.

Jones also had a big hand in the goal that gave Mick McCarthy's side the lead. The midfielder won the ball from Heskey and initiated the break. Jones continued his run into the box and Matt Jarvis pulled a ball back from the byline for him, and as Milner sprinted back to make the challenge he only succeeded in knocking it past his own keeper.

McCarthy made his intent for the second half clear, first bringing on George Elokobi and then Michael Mancienne as he aimed to stifle a Villa fightback.

The home side saw plenty of the ball but despite many crosses being fired in from both flanks their two big strikers were largely frustrated in the air and ineffective on the deck.

Carew glanced one header on target which was a simple catch for Hahnemann, and with another teed himself up for a volley, only to completely miss the ball as he went to strike it.

O'Neill brought on Marc Albrighton and Steve Sidwell, but his side still struggled to unlock a resolute and well-organised Wolves defence.

Sidwell replaced Downing, who was subbed off in front of the watching Fabio Capello, who also saw a below-par performance from Milner and a largely anonymous one from Heskey.

That was until the 82nd minute when the target man controlled and held up a long ball inside the Wolves box before laying it off to Sidwell. The substitute fired a low shot and Carew - level with the last defender as the strike came in - get a telling touch on the ball to guide it past Hahnemann and salvage a point.

FC Barcelona 4-0 Vfb Stuttgart: Messi double star

espnstar.com
Lionel Messi staged another masterclass to power holders Barcelona into the quarter-finals of the Champions League at the expense of Stuttgart.

Messi struck a brilliant opener after just 12 minutes to put Barca on track, and then played a key role as Pedro Rodriguez made it 2-0 soon after as the Catalan giants built a 3-1 aggregate lead.

Messi, who was a constant menace, added a third on the hour mark to take his tally to eight goals in the last four games before Bojan Krkic completed the romp late on as Barca became Spain's only representative to make it into the last eight.

Real Madrid, whose Bernabeu stadium will stage this year's final, and Sevilla were both dumped out in the last week while Atletico Madrid bade farewell to the competition in the group stages.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola opted to start Thierry Henry as centre-forward instead of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the Frenchman was the home side's biggest threat early on, bringing a save out of Jens Lehmann in the second minute and then shooting wide not long after.

Fresh from his stunning treble in Sunday's 3-0 win over Valencia - his second hat-trick in 2010 already - the Argentinian broke the deadlock with a superb finish.

Yaya Toure fed the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year near the halfway line and the diminutive playmaker was allowed to venture unchallenged to the edge of the Stuttgart area before unleashing an unstoppable shot that flew into the top corner.

Messi then turned provider 10 minutes later as Barca doubled their advantage.

His brilliant pass inside the Stuttgart right-back was latched onto by Toure, and his first-time pass inside was slotted home by Pedro.

Those two early strikes put Barca in total control and with Stuttgart creating little to trouble Victor Valdes and his defence, Guardiola's sextuple winners went into the half-time interval knowing only a huge reversal of fortunes in the second half would deny them a place in the next round.

The script did not change at all though, with Messi again featuring heavily.

He set up Toure for a low shot that fizzed just wide in the 55th minute before then extending Barca's lead five minutes later.

Pedro's pass back to the edge of area was cleverly flicked into Messi's path by Dani Alves, and the 22-year-old spun Timo Gebhart and drilled another left-footed shot past Lehmann from 20 yards out.

That was Messi's fourth Champions League goal of the season and took his tally to 29 in all competitions.

Sevilla 1-2 CSKA Moscow: Keisuke Honda great free-kick

ukeurosport.com
CSKA Moscow booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals thanks to a howler from Sevilla keeper Andres Palop that gifted the Russians a 2-1 win in their last-16 second leg at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

The keeper failed to keep out a second-half free-kick from Keisuke Honda despite getting two hands on the ball to gift the visitors to the Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium a 3-2 aggregate victory.

Tomas Necid had earlier given the visitors the lead after 38 minutes with a neat side-footed finish but Sevilla struck straight back two minutes later when Diego Perotti toe-poked home after a CSKA failed to deal with a long ball forward.

The game began in explosive fashion for the hosts with Luis Fabiano drawing a fine two-handed stop from CSKA keeper Igor Akinfeev after only three minutes.

The early opportunity, however, did not set the tone for the rest of the encounter as the first half quickly descended into a dour war of attrition with both teams frequently gifting possession to the opposition.

The Spanish crowd became restless and whistled their disappointment as the hosts failed to unlock a steely Russian rearguard and resorted to lofting long balls into their opponents' box.

CSKA carved out their first real chance after 25 minutes when Honda combined well with Necid before firing straight at keeper Palop who saved well before the visitors made the breakthrough seven minutes before halftime.

Milos Krasic fed Necid on the edge of the area and he showed a great first touch to open his body up before side-footing neatly into the bottom corner.

The goal, though, served only to wake Sevilla from their slumber and within two minutes they were on level terms.

CSKA failed to deal with a simple long ball forward and Jesus Navas set up Perotti to toe-poke it past Akinfeev from 10 yards.

Sevilla brought on Frederic Kanoute at the break in an effort to carry the attacking impetus they had gained into the second half.

And the change almost paid immediate dividends when Perotti came within inches of making contact with a Kanoute flick-on with the goal gaping.

That was Sevilla's last clear-cut chance as on 54 minutes Palop handed the visitors the lead with an astonishing error.

Honda fired in a freekick from 25 yards that should have been comfortably dealt with by the Sevilla keeper but he somehow contrived to deflect it into his own net despite getting his whole body behind the ball.

That left the hosts needing to score twice to progress which proved to be an insurmountable task.

The Spanish side had struggled to break down the Russians throughout both legs of the encounter and apart from a late half-volley from Kanoute that flew over the bar, Akinfeev's goal remained unthreatened for the remainder of the tie.

Sunderland 4-0 Bolton: Darren Bent hattrick

uk.eurosport.com
Sunderland ended their barren run of 14 games without a win by beating Bolton Wanderers 4-0 at the Stadium of Light in the Premier League.

Frazier Campbell gave the Black Cats the best possible start with the fastest goal of the season so far after just 41 seconds. Bolton recovered well, however, and Sunderland's second goal, scored by Darren Bent just after the hour mark, came totally against the run of play.

The result was put beyond any doubt with 20 minutes remaining when Sam Ricketts conceded a penalty and received his second yellow card for a clumsy challenge in the area on Bent, who sent Jussi Jaaskelainen the wrong way from the spot.

Bent completed his hat-trick with two minutes remaining, firing home at the near post from Campbell's cross.

The result sees Sunderland move up to 13th in the table, six points clear of the relegation zone, while Bolton slip to 14th, a point behind their opponents.

Sunderland fans could have been forgiven for anticipating the visit of Bolton with a sense of foreboding given their team's dismal run of form, though Campbell ensured they were soon in high spirits in lightning quick time.

Lorik Cana flicked the ball up on the edge of the area before hoisting a high, hopeful ball to the back post where Campbell stole in ahead of his marker to volley home from close range.

Despite the scenes of jubilation amongst the home fans, Bolton refused to panic, and regained their composure to put a sustained spell of pressure on their opponents. Johan Elmander went close to levelling matters within minutes, though he saw his shot squeeze just past the post.

Bent broke clear on the counter to test Jaaskelainen with a low shot on 11 minutes, though it was Bolton who shaded the possession as the game progressed.

The visitors' defence was horribly exposed midway through the half, however, as a fine pass from Campbell picked out Bent in the area, but after cutting inside and shifting the ball past the reach of the keeper, the striker put his low shot wide of the target.

Michael Turner and John Mensah coped admirably with the aerial threat posed by Elmander and Kevin Davies in the Bolton attack, though the Trotters defence was undone once again as Alan Hutton raced clear just before half-time - like Bent, he failed to keep his shot on target.

The tempo of the game moved up a notch at the start of the second half as Bolton piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser, though they were caught out by the pace of Bent just after the hour mark.

He received the ball from Lee Cattermole and raced past Ricketts, before powering a shot that squirmed through the body of Jaaskelainen.

Bolton boss Owen Coyle reacted immediately, replacing the underwhelming Elmander with Ivan Klasnic, though the Croat could only look on as his side conceded their third goal moments later.

Bent once again got goal side of Ricketts, and a push in the back from the defender saw referee Steve Bennett point to the spot and show Ricketts his second yellow card. As he trudged down the tunnel, Bent fired home the spot-kick.

The striker completed his hat-trick with two minutes remaining, sweeping Campbell's cross home to give the home fans the warm feeling of success they had not experienced in the Premier League since November.
