Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 Fulham: Crouch, Bentley strikes

uk.eurosport.com
Peter Crouch capitalised on poor Fulham defending to poke home his side's opener in the 27th minute before Bentley, on his first Spurs appearance since December 1, notched with a deflected free-kick on the hour.

A Fulham side containing man of the moment Chris Smalling offered only a limited threat to the home side's hopes of claiming all three points and with a two-goal lead established Spurs coasted home.

Tom Huddlestone had two attempts at goal inside the first three minutes, the first with barely a minute played drawing a smart save from Mark Schwarzer low to his right.

Fulham have become accustomed to the Australian performing with distinction but Schwarzer was culpable for Spurs' first goal on 27 minutes.

Having seemingly stifled Spurs, and causing a worry at the other end too when Heurelho Gomes had to be out quickly to deny Bobby Zamora, Fulham shot themselves in the foot.

Bentley delivered a cross from the right that was missed by Schwarzer and, with Bjorn Helge Riise attempting to let the ball run, Luka Modric nipped in to pass to Crouch who finished from close-range.

20-year-old defender Smalling, who is set to be a Manchester United player from the start of next season, was a key component of Roy Hodgson's well-drilled side as they restricted Spurs initially.

The home side might still have found themselves two goals to the good at the interval though as Modric turned Aaron Hughes inside out before dispatching a shot that dipped narrowly over the bar.

Damien Duff registered Fulham's first attempt on goal with a first-time shot straight at Gomes eight minutes after half-time.

Pretty in possession but lacking any punch, Fulham knew their away day woes would continue when Spurs doubled their lead in fortuitous circumstances on the hour.

After a strong run from the impressive Gareth Bale was ended unfairly by Hughes, Bentley gave a reminder of his abilities with a fiercely struck free-kick that took a deflection off the luckless Riise before leaving Schwarzer wrong-footed.

Bale's involvement in the clincher was fitting as the Wales full-back was about to taste victory for the first time as a Premier League starter after 23 previous appearances without a win.

That stroke of luck decided the outcome and, as Fulham were left ruing their inability to win away from home since the opening day of the season, Spurs could reflect on a comfortable victory.

The three points sees Tottenham remain fourth but, although they are now three points ahead of Liverpool, Redknapp's side can still be overtaken by Manchester City and Aston Villa who both have two games in hand.

Bolton Wanderers 1-0 Burnley: Chung-Yong Lee cool finish

uk.eurosport.yahoo.com
Owen Coyle got his first league win as Bolton boss at the expense of former club Burnley as Chung-Yong Lee's first half goal earned them a 1-0 win at the Reebok Stadium.

The visitors' offside claims fell on deaf ears as Lee latched onto Kevin Davies's clever through ball on 35 minutes to finish off the underside of the bar.

Bolton deserved the three points - which lifted them out of the Premier League relegation zone at Burnley's expense - and could have won by more.

Fabrice Muamba's surging run was brilliantly picked out by Davies in the 18th minute but the midfielder failed to keep his shot down.

After the break, Tamir Cohen should have tested Brian Jensen with a free header, while substitutes Jonathan Elmander and Ricardo Gardner both went close.

Burnley lost both Chris McCann and skipper Graham Alexander to injury early on - and Brian Laws's side looked disjointed as they struggled to create chances.

Michael Duff could not divert Alexander's driven cross on target in the 13th minute, while Chris Eagles blazed well over after a Steven Fletcher shot had been parried by Jussi Jaaskaleinen with the score still goalless.

But that was all they could muster and Jaaskaleinen was redundant in the second half.

Coyle was given the expected hot reception by the 5,000 travelling Burnley fans - and his applause in their direction at the final whistle was not reciprocated.

But he certainly goes home the happier manager with his successor at Turf Moor Laws still searching for his first point and his first goal.

Werder Bremen 2-3 Bayern Munchen: Robben winning scores

espnstar.com
Bayern Munich moved to the top of the Bundesliga by edging a five-goal thriller at Werder Bremen to secure their sixth successive win.

Aaron Hunt put Bremen ahead in the 10th minute, but Bayern responded with goals from Thomas Muller and Ivica Olic to deservedly lead at the break.

The Bavarians missed chance after chance and were punished when Hugo Almeida levelled in the 75th minute, but Arjen Robben sealed three points for the visitors three minutes later.

Robben missed the opportunity to put Bayern ahead as early as the third minute when he hit the outside of the post after being put through with only Tim Wiese to beat.

The hosts' defence was all at sea again moments later when Olic was able to break through with only the goalkeeper to beat, but his attempted lob was touched behind by Wiese.

Bremen then went ahead with their first attack of the game in the 10th minute. An excellent display of quick passing carved open the Bayern defence and culminated in Marko Marin threading the ball into the path of Hunt, whose angled drive beat Hans-Jorg Butt inside his near post.

Bayern responded well and were deservedly level in the 25th minute when Muller kept his composure to beat Wiese after a clever dummy by Mario Gomez had allowed his strike partner to pick up Bastian Schweinsteiger's pass inside the penalty area.

Robben missed another one-on-one on the half-hour mark with Gomez then guilty of missing with just Wiese to beat.

But Bayern's persistence was rewarded in the 35th minute when Olic put the finishing touch to an excellent team move which involved Robben, Mark van Bommel and Philipp Lahm, whose cross was helped on by Gomez to Olic at the far post.

And they should have had a third just before the break when Robben lifted the ball over an open goal from 20 yards after Wiese had lost his challenge on Muller outside the penalty area and the ball had broken free.

Bayern continued with their one-way traffic in the second half, missing a hatful of chances. Robben was guilty of the worst miss in the 52nd minute when he placed his shot wide with only Bayern's substitute goalkeeper Michael Rensing to beat.

And Bayern were punished for their profligacy when Almeida equalised in the 75th minute.

Marin lifted the ball over the Bayern defence and the Portuguese forward's excellent control and volley into the far corner gave Bremen an unlikely leveller.

Daniel Van Buyten missed an open goal at the other end and it seemed as though Bayern were going to pay dearly for their wastefulness until Robben took arguably his hardest chance of the afternoon. His free-kick from near the touchline went in off the underside of the crossbar.

There was still time for Bremen to have the ball in the back of the net once again, but Marin's goal was wrongly ruled out for offside late on.
