OL Lyon 1-0 Real Madrid: Makoun stunning shot
afp
Lyon picked up their third successive home win over Real after the Cameroon midfielder Jean Makoun drove a stunning 25-metre shot into the top corner of the net in the 47th minute.
Earlier Ronaldo tried to set up Gonzalo Higuain in the box with a clever back-heel but Lyon's defenders reacted more quickly than the Argentine striker.
Sidney Govou went close for Lyon with two early volleys and the hosts almost broke the deadlock before the interval when a superb long-range volley by Cesar Delgado hit the post.
Makoun put the home team in front soon after the restart and Lisandro Lopez almost made it 2-0 when he shot just wide. Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris then saved a deflected shot by Ronaldo and another attempt by Higuain from close range.
"It was a very physical match, Lyon played with a lot of passion and they covered the ground well and marked us very well,'' Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini said.
"The result is not good for us, we've conceded a goal without scoring. We will need a very disciplined performance to turn this round, but I have faith in my players.''
The second leg is in three weeks at the Bernabeu stadium, with defender Marcelo and Xabi Alonso suspended after collecting yellow cards.
